What we can do together to restore habeas corpus

On April 18, 2007, the ACLU launched an aggressive Campaign to Restore the Constitution — a far-reaching effort to reclaim our lost liberties, reverse bad laws and undo reckless assertions of executive power.

Our first priority is to reverse the damage done by the Military Commissions Act (MCA), which eliminates protections against unlawful imprisonment, convictions based on coerced evidence and numerous other violations of due process. It also gives the president absolute power to designate enemy combatants and to set his own definitions of torture.

To preserve American values of freedom and fairness, Congress must act now to reverse the damage done by this dangerous legislation and restore respect for the Constitution and the rule of law.

To mobilize the public and build grassroots support for this vital campaign to restore our Constitutional values, we are:

  • Running radio advertisements, at saturation levels, in various states around the country.

  • Building a clarion call in support of the Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007, recently introduced in both the House and Senate.

  • Tapping into our nationwide affiliate network to build a groundswell of grassroots support.

  • Pressuring Congress to vigorously pursue hearings and oversight investigations to address habeas corpus, extraordinary rendition and torture.

  • Filing lawsuits to expose government abuses and challenge practices like extraordinary rendition.

  • Standing witness as human rights observers at Guantanamo Bay and pressing the government to close the facility that’s tarnishing America’s reputation amongst the nations of the world.

Your involvement — your voice, your network of friends and family, your support — are critical to restoring the Constitution. You can do three things to help restore habeas corpus today:

  1. Sign the petition. Help us collect 100,000 signatures and send a resounding message that we want Congress and the President to respect the Constitution.

  2. Ask your friends to sign the petition by sending them a postcard. Encourage others to get involved in the ACLU’s campaign to restore the Constitution by signing the petition today.

  3. Join the ACLU. Please become a member today and join the more than 550,000 ACLU members fighting to restore the Constitution and American values.

For the past seven years, George Bush has repeatedly violated the Constitution and taken away basic American rights. The worst of it is that the Congress and all of us have let it happen.

This isn’t our America. The time to take action has come.
